Howard University

Howard University, in Washington, D.C., was chartered by the federal government in 1867. Named after its first president, General Oliver O. Howard, it has historically been the national university for African Americans. By the turn of the century, Howard had developed a strong liberal arts emphasis, with preparatory programs in education, theology, law, and medicine. The materials sent to the Paris World's Fair reflect the university’s different programs.
