The Exhibit of American Negroes was created largely through the efforts of W. E. B. DuBois, Thomas Calloway, and many of the historic black colleges. The schools that sent materials to Paris were all located in the South; most were founded after the Civil War. Their contributions included photographs, student papers, and a limited number of three-dimensional objects (a statue was among the objects sent). Included in this reconstruction are photographs sent by the following schools: Fisk University, Howard University, Tuskegee Institute, Hampton Institute, Claflin College, and Agricultural and Mechanical College.
